Add and edit metadata
Metadata is the additional information that could be added to a barrier. This information can include the barrier type, its condition, owner and location.
Bowtie Master allows users to add customised metadata (i.e titles and colour formats) to the barriers they have identified. Improving the visibility of critical pieces of information related to the controls of your operation. This guide details how to add and delete metadata.
A standard list of metadata types could be created for your organisation via the settings menu. If you would like to create metadata types for each of the bowties you create have a look at adding new metadata at a bowtie diagram level.
Adding metadata to one specific diagram
Step 1: To add a new type of metadata go to the Metadata Side Menu found on the left-side of the Diagram Editor and click on + METADATA.
Any change you make here only apply to this diagram. Go to the Setting Menu to create a standard list of metadata that apply to all diagrams created.
Step 2: Choose a name and colour for your metadata. Try creating drop down option using the button in the top right corner. You will also need to select a name and colour for each of the options. If you’d like to use free text rather than a drop down menu, simply hit save.
The newly created metadata will be displayed on the Metadata Side Menu.
Adding new metadata for all new diagrams
If you would like to set different metadata types for the bowties created in your organisation this can be done in the settings menu.
Step 1: Go to the SETTINGS Menu and then the METADATA tab
Step 2: Click on the + METADATA field and type in a new name for the metadata.
- Select a colour for the metadata
- Add in options by clicking on the + OPTION, type in each option and choose a colour and click SAVE
- If the metadata requires a free text input do not include options, click SAVE
Deleting metadata
To delete metadata within a diagram, open your metadata menu on the left side of your diagram. Select the metadata you want to delete, and click DELETE in the bottom left corner, then confirm your choice.
This action cannot be undone.
To delete metadata across your settings, navigate to the SETTINGS menu and then head to the METADATA tab. Click the bin icon to the right of the metadata you want to delete, then click CONFIRM.

Adding Metadata to barriers
Step1: To add metadata to a barrier, double click on the barrier. Select the type of metadata you’d like to add from the list in the pop up.
Step 2: Select from your drop down list, or enter free text in the text box provided.
